Chapter 44

Robyn’s head throbbed as the briny stench of freezing sea air assaulted her nostrils. She tried to move, but couldn't: her hands and feet felt restrained. Her back ached and the rolling motion coming from underneath her body was making her nauseous. Dazed, her eyes opened and focused on her surroundings. Dark-stained, marine plywood panels lined the walls and floor. A shaft of light entered into the space through a porthole. The maniac who'd injected her in the neck, on the car park, with some kind of sedative had enslaved her in the hold of a boat. She glared in horror at the thick, black cable-ties binding her wrists and ankles like an abattoir carcass.

Suddenly, light flooded into the space as a hatch above her head opened. ‘You’re gonna take this case to a watery grave. You fucking betrayed Mother Cymru, you dirty slave to English masters,’ a deep Welsh voice said.

A cold realisation spread over her like a bitter Snowdon wind: she was in the clutches of the killer and, if she didn't think fast, she'd never reach her forty-seventh birthday.

He dropped the hatch with a thud. Her stomach lurched as she rolled sideways and vomited into a channel running the length of her prison. The boat rose and fell sharply as it navigated waves. She wretched again, but this time only bile erupted from her mouth. Its vile acidic heat burnt her throat.
